  • 1 cup unsalted butter Can substitute with coconut oil or vegetable oil for a dairy-free option.
  • 2 cups sugar Brown sugar can be used for a richer flavor or coconut sugar for a healthier alternative.
  • 4 large eggs Use 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce or mashed bananas per egg for a vegan version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free option.
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup chocolate chips Optional add-in for extra chocolate flavor.

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, remove from heat.
  • Add sugar, eggs, and vanilla to the melted butter and stir well to combine.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add this mixture to the butter mixture, stirring until well combined.
  • If using chocolate chips, fold them into the batter now.
  • Spread the brownie batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Brownies should be soft in the center.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week. They can also be frozen for up to 3 months.
