Preparation
- Prepare a 9x13 baking dish by coating the entire inside with butter or cooking spray and set aside.
- Slice the French bread into 1-inch thick slices and arrange them in rows in the baking dish, overlapping the slices.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring they are evenly covered. Spoon some mixture in between the slices.
- Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
- The next day, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Flip each piece of bread to ensure it is well coated.
- For the topping, combine all topping ingredients in a medium bowl and mix well.
- Spoon the topping over the bread slices and spread it evenly.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the casserole is puffed and lightly golden.
Notes
Serve warm and dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup for extra sweetness. Fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries can add a lovely touch on top. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
