Ingredients

For the Custard

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup half-and-half or whole milk Use whole milk for a richer flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adjust to taste.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Feel free to adjust sweetness.
  • 1 pinch salt

For Cooking

  • 4 tablespoons butter Use more as needed while cooking.
  • 1 pack King’s Hawaiian Rolls (12-count)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Whisk eggs and half-and-half in a large bowl until smooth.
  • Add vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt, then mix well.
  • Poke a few holes in the bottom of each Hawaiian roll using a toothpick or skewer to help them absorb the custard.

Cooking

  • Work in small batches. Dip each roll into the custard mixture, soaking for about 30 seconds. Turn them to coat evenly, but don’t leave them in too long to avoid sogginess.
  • Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a nonstick skillet or on a griddle over medium-low heat.
  • Cook the dipped rolls for 30–60 seconds per side, flipping to brown all sides evenly.
  • Repeat with the rest of the rolls, adding more butter as needed.

Serving

  • Serve the rolls warm with powdered sugar, fresh berries, or maple syrup on top, if desired.

Notes

Best enjoyed fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven.
