Ingredients
  

Meatball Mixture
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • 2 cups marinara sauce Use spicy marinara for additional heat if desired.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt to taste Salt
  • Pepper to taste Pepper
Assembly Ingredients
  • 1 loaf Italian bread Can use baguette, hoagie rolls, or gluten-free bread.
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese Can substitute with provolone or cheddar.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until they become translucent and fragrant, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground beef to the pan. Cook until browned, seasoning with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  4. Pour the marinara sauce into the pan and stir until the meat is well-coated, allowing it to simmer for a few minutes.
  5. Slice the Italian bread into individual servings and place them in a baking dish, cut side up.
  6. Scoop the meat mixture onto each piece of bread and top with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven, let cool for a minute, and serve hot.

Notes

For a crisper crust, broil the subs for an additional 1-2 minutes after baking. Make sure to monitor the meat closely while cooking to avoid overcooking.
