Preparation
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and set aside.
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder. Mix well and shape into three patties.
Cooking
- Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned, then reduce heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
- Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, relish, and sugar in a small bowl and set aside.
- In a separate skillet, place one slice of buttered bread butter-side down, top with cheese and a patty, then spread sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread and place on top.
- Grill the sandwich for about 2-3 minutes on each side until the bread is toasted and cheese is melted.
- Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Serving
- Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
Notes
Serve with crispy fries, coleslaw, or a side salad. Wrap and refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days, reheat in a skillet or microwave.
