Classic Patty Melt

Ingredients
  

For the Patty Melt

  • 6 slices rye bread You can substitute with whole wheat or sourdough.
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened For buttering the bread.
  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise For the sauce.
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup For the sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon real bacon bits
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese Can substitute with Swiss or American.
  • 6 slices Provolone cheese

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread and set aside.
  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, black pepper, sea salt, and onion powder. Mix well and shape into three patties.

Cooking

  • Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned, then reduce heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, bacon bits, relish, and sugar in a small bowl and set aside.
  • In a separate skillet, place one slice of buttered bread butter-side down, top with cheese and a patty, then spread sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread and place on top.
  • Grill the sandwich for about 2-3 minutes on each side until the bread is toasted and cheese is melted.
  • Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Serving

  • Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with crispy fries, coleslaw, or a side salad. Wrap and refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days, reheat in a skillet or microwave.
