Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup water
  • cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs

For the Filling

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 jar (about 12 oz) caramel sauce

For the Topping

  • 1 tub (8 oz) whipped topping
  • to taste chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips for garnish

Instructions

Bake the Cake

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix until smooth. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 15 minutes.

Poke Holes

  • Once the cake has cooled slightly, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the top of the cake. Make sure to create enough holes for the sauce to soak in.

Add the Filling

  • Pour the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the cake, allowing it to fill the holes. Follow this by drizzling the caramel sauce over the top. Let the cake sit for about 30 minutes, allowing it to soak up all that goodness.

Topping

  • Spread the whipped topping evenly over the cake. If desired, add chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips for a finishing touch. Place the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to let the flavors meld.

Notes

Serve chilled for best experience, and store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This cake can be made in advance and even frozen for up to a month.
