Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 2 lbs Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • ½ cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1 each Egg (beaten)
  • 1 each Onion (finely diced)
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper

For the Gravy and Baking

  • 3 tablespoons Butter (salted or unsalted)
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth (low sodium preferred)
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 each Onion (sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until everything is well incorporated. Form the mixture into 6-8 oval-shaped patties.

Cooking

  • In a large oven-safe skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are golden brown. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and sauté until soft and translucent. Add 3 tablespoons of flour and stir for about 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring until smooth and thickened.

Baking

  • Nestle the browned patties back into the gravy mixture, ensuring they are covered. Cover the skillet tightly and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Let rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure that your skillet is preheated for better browning. Avoid overmixing the beef mixture to keep patties tender. If gravy seems too thick after baking, add a splash of broth or cream. Let the dish rest after baking for best flavor melding and serving ease.
